Roy was born on Ocracoke Island, NC on August 17th 1921 and attended Ocracoke School. He left Ocracoke in 1939, when, like many of his friends, he headed north in search of jobs and adventure. He found plenty of both, working on dredges and being drafted into the US army, and enjoying a short but interesting career as a traveling musician. He toured with the Barnum and Bailey Circus band from New York to Virginia, playing the matinee show called "Stage Stars of Screen and Radio." Over the years he had worked as a fisherman, cook, handyman, and night watchman for the NCDOT Ocracoke ferry station, but his first love was to sing and pick his guitar. Roy had seen a lot of changes on Ocracoke, but wasn't the least bit bitter about them. He'd never met a stranger and he loves to share his music and stories. His good humor and infectious smile lit up everyone around him. Roy passed away in September of 2007 and we miss him dearly.
